Work directly with Brad Kessell, who is a producer, executive and writer for Gold Circle Entertainment (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, PITCH PERFECT, THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT) for the past 11 years. Prior to Gold Circle Brad was a VP of Paramount Pictures for 12 years.

One of the main reasons why Stage 32 Happy Writers was created is to help writers take the mystery out of their writing and to ensure them that they are going down the right path. One of our most prestigious educational pillars is our Stage 32 Happy Writers 8 Week Online Working Writer's Lab. Writers that have completed this course have continuously told us that it is the best class they have taken and how it tremendously made an impact on their script.

The objective for this hands-on 8 week online course will be to pick a commercial and unique concept, create memorable and engaging characters, develop a solid structural skeleton outline, paint vivid and concise description passages, and layer your characters with crisp and distinct dialogue. Like painting a picture, this course will assist the writer on taking a blank canvas and creating art that will stand out. The first 8 Week Online Working Writer's Lab will walk you through all the way to a solid full outline of your project. This concrete skeleton will make the scripting exponentially easier.

As with any class offered by the Stage 32 Happy Writers, we go through the hundreds and hundreds of executives in our roster and pick the most appropriate one for that specific class. We chose the teachers for our Stage 32 Happy Writers 8 Week Online Working Writer's Lab extremely carefully. We are thrilled and honored to have executive Brad Kessell of Gold Circle Entertainment as your mentor! For over 20 years Brad has been a top executive at Paramount Pictures and Gold Circle Entertainment and has worked on some of the most wildly successful films from FATAL ATTRACTION to PITCH PERFECT. He will not only bring his wealth of knowledge about developing and moving scripts up the studio system, but also his own experiences writing for major productions.

This 8 week online course comes with private sessions with Brad, homework assignments, hands-on training and detailed lectures.

Classes take place online using a designated software program from Stage 32. You can participate from the comfort of your own home and you will be able to communicate directly with your instructor during the class. If you cannot attend the live class, you can still participate! Each class will be recorded and Brad will have designated office hours to work with the class. More information can be found below.

The Curriculum for the 8 Week Lab

WEEK #1 – The Story of Me; Your Questions; Your Stories (2/17)

Discussion to cover: General Class Overview; my history/experiences; what I write/love about writing, what I tend to look for in a good story/screenplay, and some of your initial queries as raised in the pre-class questionnaire. NOTE: Given the online format, I will use this week’s “office hours” to more personally respond to/discuss the ideas you are contemplating working on during the Lab.

WEEK #2 – Character (2/24)

A discussion on the creation of strong, unique, memorable Characters; how to have them best serve your story, the genre, themes, etc. Dialogue/voice to be discussed. Will cover some examples, including personal experience.

WEEK #3 – Act I; Premise into Story (3/3)

Discussion to center around how to make the leap from basic premise/concept and characters into a full-blooded Story. Topics: where to start, what to include in Act I, where does Act I end/Act II begins, creating a world, setting a tone, etc. Will discuss examples of strong (attention-grabbing and/or smartly-chosen) and weak (meandering, overstuffed, unfocused, etc.) beginnings.page1image15024 page1image15184 page1image15344

WEEK #4 – The Story So Far (Consultation) (3/10)

No on-line class this week. Instead, you will submit premise, Character Bio(s), and Act I outline for review; I will discuss the materials individually in 30 minute phone calls and advise any changes/concerns.

WEEK #5 – Act II; Structure and Plotting (3/17)

Discussion to revolve around the plotting and development of your story across Act II, with examples focusing particularly on Structure (midpoints, End of Act II, internal/external conflict, etc.).

WEEK #6 – Theme; What’s it All About? (3/24)

Discussion to revolve around how to ensure that your script isn’t just an escalation of events, but is a rich narrative experience that is hopefully actually about something. Topics to include Theme, Topicality, Relatability, Universality.

WEEK #7 – Act III; Sticking the Landing (3/31)

When and how to achieve a strong finish is arguably one of the most difficult parts of writing a screenplay. Discussion will revolve around examples of scripts/films that have accomplished this, as well as those that have not (and why).

WEEK #8 – The Completed Outline (Consultation) (4/7)

No on-line class this week. Instead, you will turn in your completed outline for review; I will then discuss with you over a 30-minute consultation.
