We're seeing growing popularity of all kinds of traditional and diverse comedic storytelling in comedies like THE BIG SICK, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, PALM SPRINGS and I CARE A LOT to name a few. With the more comedies getting greenlit every day, the search for comedy material is on. 

You have an idea for a comedy movie script, yet you don’t know where to begin. The mere thought of typing FADE IN makes you feel alive (or scares you!). And, no matter where you are at - at the grocery store, in the car, in the shower - you hear voices in your head. Wait, that sounds wrong - you hear your character's voices in your head.  That's better. These characters have quirks that make you smirk and tell jokes that make you laugh. But, for now, they have an audience of one - you.

So, how do you get these characters out of your mind and take the nuggets of "funny" you've created and turn them into a story outline? You will need to turn them into a concise structure with concepts, character arcs, and climatic turns. The sooner you can nail this down, then the sooner you can begin writing your next great script.

And, to give yourself a competitive advantage you'll need to work one-on-one under the guidance of a literary manager who works in comedy. We're here to help you do exactly that.  

David Chien is a literary manager at Art/Work Entertainment which has been selling and staffing comedy clients on the industry's leading series for years, including shows on Amazon, HBO Max and Jason Bateman's production company Aggregate just this year. They have also had clients work for Netflix, The CW, Cinemax, CBS, NBC, FX, Starz, Nickelodeon, EPIX, and TBS, to name a few. For over 10 years now, David has helped countless writers improve their scripts, get staffed on series, pitch and sell their scripts to major executives. He's developed a passion for bringing the best out of diverse writers and is ready to share this passion with the Stage 32 community.

In this lab, you will be working directly with David in a virtual class setting and also during one-on-one online sessions. He will expertly guide you through a powerful and undeniably useful process of outlining and structuring your comedy feature so that when it’s time to write FADE IN at the top, you know every beat, every scene turn, and every character arc. During this 8-week lab, you will receive personal one-on-one guidance with David and also have the opportunity to work directly with other classmates to share ideas, determine the best concept to go with, and, in some cases, make connections that will continue to serve you in your writing endeavors. You will wrap up this eight week lab with a solid outline, fresh ideas, and a hot fire in your heart to kick out your next great script, under the guidance of a manger who knows not only how to pull great writing out of clients, but also what will sell and what will make decision makers notice you.
