Budgets, Cash Flows and Cost Reports, oh my! Have you ever looked at one of these documents and just seen numbers? Have you ever tried to fill out tax incentive pre-qualification form and been overwhelmed?

Understanding and navigating your film’s financials is crucial to ensuring your project runs smoothly and stays on track. Budgeting, managing cash flow, and keeping accurate cost reports are the backbone of any successful film production. Without a solid grasp of these elements, even the most creative and promising projects can fall apart due to financial mismanagement. By mastering these aspects, you’ll be able to create a realistic financial plan for your film, ensuring you have the funds needed at every stage of production.

You may face common challenges and missteps when it comes to managing your film’s financials. These might include underestimating costs, poor cash flow management, or not understanding how to properly set up your film’s infrastructure. These mistakes can lead to production delays, increased costs, or even project failure. Learning to avoid these pitfalls is essential to protecting your project and ensuring it gets across the finish line.

Your instructor, Maura Anderson, brings over a decade of experience in independent film production to this course. Starting her career at New York-based Gigantic Pictures, she has since worked in various roles from production coordinator to line producer. Maura has production managed critically acclaimed films like WINTER'S BONE and ON THE ICE, as well as produced Netflix hits like ADA TWIST, SCIENTIST and THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL OF ALL and directed the feature film HEARTLAND. Her extensive experience across all facets of production makes her uniquely qualified to guide you through the complexities of film financials.

In this two-part class, you’ll dive deep into the essentials of film budgeting, cash flow management, and cost reporting. In Part 1, Maura will teach you how to create a realistic financial plan for your film and ensure that there’s always money in the bank for what you need. In Part 2, you’ll learn about setting up your film’s infrastructure, managing cost reports, and taking advantage of tax incentives. Each part includes a Q&A session with Maura, giving you the opportunity to get answers to your specific questions. Although the class is no longer live, you’ll still benefit from the recorded sessions and are encouraged to apply the knowledge to your own projects.
