In the past year, Artificial intelligence (A.I.) programs have emerged as the most paradigm shifting creative technology since the invention of the camera. In fact, the use of AI in screenwriting was a key issue in the WGA’s decision to strike in 2023. Many writers, filmmakers, and creatives across the industry fear that AI poses an existential risk to their careers, and for good reason. 

On the one hand, generative AI programs can produce new artwork and expression, seemingly indistinguishable from the work of well-known artists, writers, composers, and filmmakers. The capabilities of AI are undeniably extraordinary. On the other hand, artwork created without even the minimum human coordination, selection, and arrangement, cannot be copyrighted, bringing into question the ownership of screenplays, artwork, and entire films based on AI generated expression.

While the future of AI and its role in the entertainment industry will continued to be monitored and governed by the WGA and it's deal with the AMPTP, it is unlikely that AI technology will be going away.
