Science fiction has always been a powerhouse in television and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Countless popular series like DEVS, BLACK MIRROR, THE EXPANSE, WESTWORLD and STRANGER THINGS continue to prove this as true. Audiences are always going to have an appetite for this type of content, and sci-fi stories and scripts will continue to be discovered, picked up, and produced as a result. If you are a science fiction writer, there is always opportunity for you and your work to find success in the TV landscape. First, though, it’s critical to understand how to best develop and pitch your project so it can actually get noticed by decision makers.
Science fiction isn’t exactly the easiest genre to pitch. That’s because there’s A LOT you have to convey in a short amount of time without losing your audience. You’re not just talking about characters and story; you’re explaining an entire world with new concepts, new technology, new rules or new paradigms. And if you’re writing for an existing show, you still have to be adept at pitching to show the showrunner you understand this heightened world and that your idea will work within it. Yet if you can master this skill and communicate your stories effectively, you can greatly improve your ability to break into the science fiction TV space.
Mickey Fisher was an unknown writer from Ironton, Ohio when his contest-winning TV script EXTANT caught the attention of Steven Spielberg and later became the science fiction series on CBS starring Halle Berry. Mickey has since firmly implanted himself in the world of science fiction television, creating the NBC series REVERIE and National Geographic’s MARS. He has also served as a consulting producer on Amazon’s JACK RYAN and a writer and co-executive producer on Guillermo Del Toro’s acclaimed FX horror series THE STRAIN. Through his journey so far, Mickey has learned a lot about how to find your place and grow in the world of television, especially science fiction television, and is ready to share.
In this unique and exclusive 2-part class, Mickey will show you how to develop and pitch your own science fiction series in this new virtual world. He’ll go over how to best develop your show and world and how to craft the perfect virtual pitch, including the elements you need to have and how to adjust depending on the network you’re pitching to. He’ll show how his own show REVERIE was developed, pitched and picked up by NBC and will demonstrate a mock pitch for the show.
Most exciting of all Mickey will host a mock writers’ room where students will have the ability to pitch their episode ideas for REVERIE and receive helpful feedback from Mickey.
If you’re interested in writing for science fiction TV, there’s not a better educational opportunity than this.
