The role of a director is pivotal in bringing stories to life, shaping compelling narratives, and uniting the creative and technical elements that define a film. With the increasing demands of modern filmmaking, directors must not only cultivate a strong creative vision but also master the skills to communicate it effectively to cast and crew. This lab offers a unique opportunity to develop these essential abilities, equipping you to confidently navigate the entire filmmaking process—whether you’re crafting a high-budget feature, episodic television, or an independent film.

Directors often face challenges in turning their creative vision into a cohesive final product. Common obstacles include struggling to break down a script effectively, building a team of cast and crew, and balancing technical and artistic responsibilities. Many directors also underestimate the importance of pre-production planning, audition techniques, and rehearsal strategies, which can set the tone for a successful shoot. Furthermore, navigating the post-production process—working with editors, responding to feedback from producers, and making tough creative decisions—can be overwhelming. This exclusive Stage 32 lab addresses these challenges head-on, offering actionable techniques for script analysis, visual storytelling, team-building, collaboration and so much more!

To help you overcome these hurdles, this lab is led by award-winning director Clay Liford, whose expertise spans over two decades of filmmaking. A graduate of the University of Texas film program, Clay has directed more than 25 feature films that have premiered at prestigious festivals like Sundance and South by Southwest. As a seasoned educator and filmmaker, Clay has a talent for breaking down complex directing concepts into practical steps that are easy to implement. His deep understanding of everything from crafting a distinct visual style to managing the delicate dynamics of cast and crew makes him the perfect mentor to guide you through your journey.

In this interactive 8-part lab, you’ll master key aspects of directing, including script analysis, team-building, visual pre-production, and the nuances of working on set and in post-production. Topics include crafting shot lists, auditioning and rehearsal techniques, blocking and staging, managing crew dynamics, and shaping performances. With a focus on both practical exercises and personalized feedback, you’ll develop the confidence to lead your film from concept to completion. By the end of this lab, you’ll walk away with the skills and resources needed to elevate your storytelling and create compelling cinematic experiences!

This interactive Stage 32 lab is held on Zoom and goes substantially more in depth than a Stage 32 webinar. Best of all? As soon as you sign up you will be linked on email with your Stage 32 Educator and given a questionnaire to fill out and send back to them. You will have access to your Educator for the duration of your class by email to ask them any questions you have about your craft or career - it’s like having a mentor on demand! And, if you can't make a live session, don't worry! All class recordings will be available 48 hours after each session and you will be able to view them in your Library on your Stage 32 profile. Finally, you can expand your network with like-minded creatives - you'll have a dedicated lounge for interactive support and discussions with your fellow classmates!

PLUS! You'll receive the following handouts:

    • Visual diagrams
    • Short readings curated by the instructor
    • Director-specific “cheat sheets” for acting and lensing
